5 destinations for a Southeast Asian adventure
/Southeast Asia is the perfect destination for those looking to immerse themselves in culture, enjoy unique cuisine, indulge in an idyllic beachfront retreat or just to have some fun in the sun. Here are five of the region’s best destinations that offer lots to see and do and embody what Southeast Asia is all about.
Singapore
Singapore is a charming mix of old and new. Shimmering skyscrapers tower above bustling city streets, while elegant colonial buildings preserve its old-world charm. Although Singapore is home to the world’s busiest port (to get some idea of its scale, take the Singapore Flyer and look out to sea), more than half of the country is covered by greenery, with over 50 major parks and four nature reserves.
Fun is also part and parcel of a Singapore holiday. Head to Universal Studios Singapore, with thrilling rides galore, while Clarke Quay more than has you more than covered with an awesome selection of bars and restaurants.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur is perfect for foodies looking for an eclectic dining experience that won’t break the bank. A reflection of its diverse population, the city’s street food offers a mix of Malay, Chineses and Indian cuisine. Visit Bukit Bintang to try oyster omelettes and banana leaf curries, then stay for the world-class nightlife that this district has to offer.
Although the city is known for landmarks such as the Petronas Twin Towers, the world’s largest twin skyscrapers, Kuala Lumpur also boasts natural attractions such as the Batu Caves which are over 400 million years old. The labyrinth of limestone caverns also features temples and Hindu shrines, attracting thousands of worshippers during annual Hindu festival, Thaipusam, and has colourful stairs, making it one of the most Instagrammable places on the planet (yes, the planet).
Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand has something for every traveller, from busting city street markets to pristine beaches, and everything in between. For those looking to experience this country’s unique culture, there are hundreds of stunning Buddhist temples and shrines scattered across the cities and villages, such as Bangkok’s dazzling Grand Palace. Built in 1782, the former royal residence houses Wat Phra Kaew, which is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in the country.
Bali, Indonesia
Renowned for its palm-fringed beaches, lush forests and incredible coastline, Bali is one of the most popular destinations for travellers looking for a tropical paradise. But it isn’t just a place to relax, as there is plenty to do in this unique paradise including scuba diving, surfing and shopping.
Seminyak is one area in particular that not only offers one of the most glorious beaches in Bali, but it is also home to a wide variety of restaurants and boutiques. For those looking to immerse themselves in local customs, take a tour to nearby markets and temples, or go on the culinary trail and explore the opportunity to prepare Balinese specialties.
Koh Samui, Thailand
Koh Samui is home to some of the most spectacular wildlife in the world, and one of the most easily observed natural wonders on the island are its butterflies. Overlooking the ocean, the Butterfly Garden allows visitors to experience tropical butterflies up close whilst strolling amongst spectacular scenery and nature, and children will love trying to spot these elegant insects.
In addition to incredible coastal scenery, Ang Thong National Marine Park can be found on Koh Samui. The park is a pristine archipelago of 42 islands, with towering limestone mountains, waterfalls, hidden coves and lakes to explore.
I give myself the challenge of writing a blog post in 10 minutes or less and cover Thailand, Algeria and visiting a different continent without using annual leave.
