About

Estonia sits in the northeast corner of Europe and is the most northerly of the three Baltic states, sharing borders with both Russia to the east and Latvia to the south.

It has been ruled at various times during the middle ages by Denmark, the German Knights of the Livonian Order and Sweden, as well as becoming a part of the Russian Empire in the 18th century. The country enjoyed a brief period of independence in 1918, until it was occupied by the Soviets during World War II, eventually becoming a part of the Soviet Union. Since regaining its independence alongside Latvia and Lithuania in 1991, Estonia has joined the European Union and Eurozone.
